What Is Apricot Kernel Shell? & The Supply Process
Apricot Kernel Shell Blasting Granule (Apricot Shell Grit / Blasting Abrasive) is a natural, environmentally friendly blasting abrasive obtained by grinding hard apricot kernel shells in industrial mills and classifying them into specific micron and mesh ranges using precision sieve systems.
Its hardness is balanced so it does not scratch the base metal, yet still removes surface dirt, rust and paint layers. Thanks to this hardness balance, it is used on automotive engine blocks, precision casting molds and historical artifact restorations to remove paint, rust, carbon and soot residues without scratching or damaging the base metal or delicate surface, even at a micron level.
Due to its organic structure, it does not release crystalline silica dust (silicosis risk) during blasting, as silica sand does; in this respect it is considered a more favorable alternative to silica sand for worker health and the environment. Mesh (calibre) ranges suited to industrial blasting nozzles are supplied wholesale in 25 kg sacks or 1-ton Big-Bag pallets.
Key Technical & Commercial Advantages
- Ideal natural hardness balance: does not scratch or abrade the surface, only removes dirt/paint
- Ecological abrasive with no silicosis risk, favorable for occupational health and safety (OHS)
- Precision sizing into the sieve class you request
- Industrial abrasive preferred for automotive mold cleaning and historical restorations
- High durability allows repeated re-use in blasting systems

Frequently Asked Questions About Apricot Kernel Shell
How many times can apricot shell granule be used in a blasting machine?
Depending on the sizing and applied air pressure, it can be recycled and reused many times in the blasting system, which significantly reduces operational costs.
How does it compare to silica sand or glass beads?
Silica sand and glass beads are hard, abrade the base metal and can cause dimensional deviation. Apricot granule, with its natural and flexible structure, works without damaging the underlying metal, mainly removing the foreign layer on the surface.
